3 years ago, I started a blog on Blogger, called The Ecotourist. At that time, I was going through a rough patch in life and I needed a Pseudonym to get me through it. Unfortunately, six months in, 5 blogs published on my journey to a sustainable career, self-doubt struck, and I quit, because I found it hard to stay positive about the journey. Meanwhile, all these years, the name, The Ecotourist, kept inspiring me – as a powerful heroine would. Now, in 2017, ready again to take on the world, I have 16 posts on the new site, and soon I’ll have more.
Why ‘The Ecotourist’?
People have asked me to define what The Ecotourist is. They’d like me to box it in as either this or that, in a nice little wrapper with a bow on top.
Is it a bird, is it a plane, maybe a travel organisation, or are you a travel blogger, or whatever?
And to be honest, I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to be like. I’m just starting out on this journey and I am keeping an open mind. It’s my journey to Unf*ckwithability after all.
I’m on a mission to become an unf*ckwithable force of sustainable world domination.
If I were to put on my Academic hat, I’d say The Ecotourist was inspired by my own research into Ecotourism. It’s a form of sustainable development through travel that I’m very passionate, but also critical, about:
[…] travel to fragile, pristine, and usually protected areas, that strives to be low impact and (often) small scale. It helps educate the traveller; provides funds for conservation; directly benefits the economic development and political empowerment of local communities, and fosters respect for different cultures and human rights. (Martha Honey, 2001: Who owns Paradise?)
However, The Ecotourist, as a platform, is more than research to me. As ecotourism is often linked to empowerment for the local population, I decided that:
The Ecotourist means EMPOWERMENT to me.
As travel is a journey that often brings freedom, personal expansion and satisfaction, The Ecotourist is the journey where I bring together my passion for Latin America, sustainable (rural) development, conservation and ecotourism with my wish to become the Unf*ckwithable hero of my own life and to change the world for the better.
To me, The Ecotourist is a Pseudonym, a Super Hero Alter Ego.
My own definition for this blog is
“The Ecotourist is a female Indiana Jones looking for adventure. Not just for the fun of it – not just for pleasure. It’s about all the P’s (People, Planet, Profit, Passion, Pleasure and Purpose). She wants to learn more about the world and become the best version of herself – unf*ckwithable. Live her life on her own terms. Her ultimate mission is to contribute to a more sustainable society while inspiring and helping others to do the same.”
This isn’t only about me. Everyone can become The Ecotourist. You just have to find your own adventure. I will provide the Amazon stories to light your way.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
